Successfully Requesting a Letter of Recommendation

Requesting and obtaining strong letters of recommendation can be daunting for some students. You may be unsure whom to ask and how to approach potential recommenders, when to ask, how to ask, etc. Let me offer some insight.

First things first, choose the right recommender.

Select individuals who know you well and can speak to your academic abilities, character, and potential. Common choices include teachers, counselors, coaches, employers, or mentors. Make sure your recommenders are willing to write a positive and detailed letter on your behalf.

Plan Ahead

Start the process early, ideally a few months before your application deadlines. Check the specific requirements of each college you're applying to, as some may have unique guidelines for recommendations.

Communicate in Person + In Writing

Approach your potential recommenders in person or via phone to request their assistance. Express your gratitude for their help and explain why you believe they are the right person to write your recommendation. Send a formal written request, ideally via email, to ensure clarity and documentation. Include a subject line that clearly states the purpose of your email, such as "Request for College Recommendation Letter." Personally, I also add a deadline, for example: Request for College Recommendation Letter by 11.1.23. I also provide a deadline about 1 week before the actual deadline for the campus. This allows a cushion to trouble shoot in case there’s an illness or issues submitting last minute.

Be Specific and Polite

Clearly state the due date for the recommendation letter. Politely ask if they are willing to write a positive recommendation on your behalf. Make it clear whether you will waive your right to see the letter (most colleges prefer confidential letters).

Provide Necessary Information

Share your resume or list of accomplishments to help them understand your achievements. Provide a brief summary of your college goals, including the programs or majors you're interested in. Share the application deadlines and any submission instructions or forms provided by the colleges. Offer to provide any additional information or materials they may need, such as transcripts, essays, or personal statements.

Follow Up

After they agree to write the recommendation, follow up with reminders as the deadline approaches. Provide a gentle nudge a few weeks before the due date if necessary.

Say Thank You

Once the recommendation letter is submitted, express your gratitude verbally and in writing to your recommender. Make sure to also let your recommenders know the outcomes of your college application process. They will appreciate hearing about your successes.

Remember that your choice of recommenders and the quality of their letters can have a significant impact on your college application, so choose wisely and maintain a professional and respectful approach throughout the process.

That’s all for now, folks! Talk soon.
