“Demonstrated Interest” What is it and why should you care?

To state it in the most simple way, universities want to have a high conversion rate for students that were admitted. This means, many of the students offered admission accepted that offer and will matriculate and attend the following semester. To help reach this goal, some campuses consider “demonstrated interest” as part of their admission review process. Meaning, if two students are equal academically, the student that demonstrated more interest during the application process would be more likely to be admitted.

Weird, right?

Knowing this, it’s important to track whether or not the campuses you’re applying to are tracking/considering demonstrated interest. This would be a good thing to note on your “Big Ugly” spreadsheet. If you signed up for the monthly task list emails- you got the template for this.

Now that you know whether or not this is something that schools will be considering as part of your application… what do you do?

Engage.

Ways to demonstrate interest:

  • Visit campus

  • Call/Email with your admissions counselor

  • Request information/sign up for the mailing list

  • Participate in interviews

  • Open your emails (Many campuses use a CRM that reports if an email was opened.)

  • Engage with the admissions account for your campus on social media

  • Apply in the early application window

That’s all for now, folks! The more you know, the better you can plan.

Talk soon!
